Wallflower, Perennial wallflower

Wallflowers are a popular choice for cottage gardens. Young plants should be available to purchase from the garden center or by mail-order from late August through to late September. Planted in autumn, they will bloom in the spring, and again in autumn. They are hardy and a cold winter will encourage them to flower more profusely.

Wallflowers prefer alkaline, well-drained soil in full sun, but they can tolerate partial shade. They are perennials, so cut them back if they become leggy or untidy. To encourage new shoots to grow from the old wood, dig them up and replant them deeper, this can be in a new or the same position.

Plant new plants 30 centimeters apart.
