Don't be tempted to buy your summer
bedding yet, unless you have a greenhouse, conservatory or cold
frame that you can store them in. A late April / early May frost
is not uncommon in the UK.
Tidy up any remaining leaves and
general garden rubbish. It's home to slugs, snails, vine weevil
and woodlice and can introduce disease and infection into your
garden.
Plant lilies and gladioli bulbs
in 4in (10cm) deep holes. Ensure that there are no air pockets
when planting as this will cause the corms to rot.
Begin regular cutting of your lawn.
If the grass is long increase the height adjustment of your lawn
mower to the highest setting and then go back over and cut it
again on a lower setting if required - unless you are planning
to mark out a cricket pitch or play bowls there's no need to cut
lower than 1½in (3cm). If your grass is long and you don't have
height adjustment only cut with one half of the mower blade (make
one normal cut across the lawn, on the second and subsequent cuts,
position the centre of the mower over the edge of the first cut)
this will ensure that the blade is at a higer speed and produce
a cleaner cut, rather than tearing the grass.
If your lawn is more moss than
grass then treat with a lawn moss killer. Combination lawn feed
and moss killer is available, but feeding your lawn when it's
not necessary will encourage it to grow quicker and therefore
need to be cut more regularly.
Feed established roses with a rose
fertilizer.
