Leek

Leeks are fairly easy to grow, will tolerate being grown in a cold exposed site but do like a sunny aspect. Although they occupy the plot for a long period of time, this means that they can continue to be harvested from autumn through to the early spring. They like a rich, well-prepared soil, so dig in plenty of compost or well-rotted manure in the winter before planting.

Usage

Lift leeks as they are required, leaving others to continue growing. The flavour of leeks deteriorate as they get larger, so pick them young. Lift the leeks with a fork, rather than wrenching them out of the ground.
